Workout builder

The tool for designing a structured workout: the areas of the screen, the blocks, the options.

Written by Romain Malbreil

The workout builder is Nolio's tool for designing a structured workout. You open it from the Plan a training page, and what you build there lands as it is in your athletes' calendars.

It lets you:

  • add and organise steps;

  • set intensity targets (heart rate, power, pace);

  • include exercises;

  • control what your athlete sees of the workout.

💡 Tip

The builder is the same whatever the sport. Running, cycling, swimming, conditioning or strength work: always the same blocks, step, exercise, repeat and chaining block. Only the intensity targets on offer change.

The four areas of the builder

Area

What it does

The toolbar
(at the top)

Add elements, format text, insert a link or media, undo or redo an action. The Add button is your starting point for building the workout.

The build area
(in the centre)

Your workout plan, in the order it will be performed. Every element you drop in can be edited, moved, duplicated or deleted.

The side panel
(on the left)

Two tabs: Targets, with your zones, your metrics and RPE, and Exercises, with your library, your team's and Nolio's. It adapts to the sport selected for the workout.

The chart
(at the bottom)

The workout drawn, under the heading Planned workout. It appears as soon as you drop in a first element.

The panel to its right sums up what your build produces: the total duration and how it breaks down by zone, the values of the metric in use, and the compatibility of the workout. On a workout, those values are calculated from the reference values of the athlete it belongs to.

On a template, no athlete is attached: that panel becomes a Simulator, where you pick the reference values yourself to see the result.

What you can add

The Add button offers seven entries. The first three are the basic blocks, the four that follow are variants of one and the same object, a block that chains exercises together.

Element

When to use it

Learn more

Step

For a block of work or recovery: a duration or a distance, one or more intensity targets, a comment for your athlete.

Exercise

For a movement from your personal library, your team's, or the Nolio library: sets, work, recovery, target, tempo, laterality.

Repeat

To repeat an identical block automatically, without duplicating it by hand. For example: 15 × 30 sec / 30 sec.

Superset, EMOM,
For Time, AMRAP

To chain several exercises inside one block. All four share the same mechanics and differ by what brings the block to an end. Strength work, circuit training, Hyrox, cross-training.

Adjusting how the workout is displayed

The Options menu, at the top right of the builder, gathers eleven settings in three families.

  • Workout: force the overall duration or distance, activate the structured workout, open the edit window automatically.

  • Steps: what your athlete reads on each step, from the percentage to the colour.

  • Exercises: the recovery pre-filled when you add an exercise.

📌 Good to know

The builder only handles the content of the workout. The title, the sport, the date, the tags and the athletes it applies to are set beforehand, on the Plan a training page.
