What is Foster load?

A load calculation method based on perceived exertion, usable without any sensor.

Written by Romain Malbreil

Foster load is a method for calculating training load based on perceived exertion: how hard the workout felt, from very easy to maximal effort.

📌 Good to know

Foster requires no sensor. That is what makes it usable everywhere, including where power and heart rate are not available: swimming, strength and conditioning, team sports.

Where the data comes from

Foster load is calculated from the RPE entered on the workout. There are two ways to provide it:

  • your athlete enters their perceived exertion after the workout;

  • you estimate the effort yourself when planning.

👉 To make RPE mandatory: Strict mode
