Start an HRV measurement in good conditions

The checklist to go through before starting an HRV measurement, and what to do if the strap doesn't respond.

Written by Romain Malbreil

HRV measurement is done from the mobile app, with a Bluetooth heart rate strap. A failed measurement almost always comes from one of the points below: go through them in order before starting.

1. Before starting the measurement

On your phone

  • Bluetooth is turned on (Android and iOS).

  • Location is turned on (Android only).

  • The Nolio app is up to date.

On your strap

  • It is switched on and working.

  • It has battery left.

  • It is properly positioned, with moistened electrodes.

  • It supports Bluetooth.

In the app

  1. Connect to the strap. The app shows when the connection is established.

  2. On the measurement screen, check that the HR and RR values are displayed live.

  3. Start the measurement.

💡 Tip

Turn the sound on: you'll be notified of the measurement's progress without having to look at the screen.

2. Troubleshooting

Symptom

What to check

The strap doesn't appear in nearby devices

That it works and is properly positioned. Above all: that it isn't already connected to another device (watch, another app). The number of simultaneous connections is limited.

HR and RR stay at 0

Fully close the app, then reopen it. Disconnect and reconnect the strap.

Measurement stopped due to poor signal quality

That the strap works, and above all that the electrodes are moistened: this is the most common cause.
