Why does my data differ from my watch or app?

Curves, elevation gain, heart rate: where the differences between Nolio and your brand's app come from, and what you can adjust.

Written by Romain Malbreil

Nolio retrieves the raw data from your watch. Brand apps, on the other hand, apply their own processing before displaying a number. That's where most of the differences you may notice on the same workout come from.

📌 Good to know

A difference doesn't mean one of the two values is wrong. They are two different readings of the same measurement: one raw, the other reprocessed by the brand.

At a glance

What differs

What you can do

The shape of the curves

Adjust the smoothing in Nolio.

Elevation gain

Run an altitude recalculation.

Heart rate (Suunto)

Nothing to adjust: Suunto only sends us raw data.

Resting HR (Garmin)

Nothing to adjust: Nolio keeps the lowest value.

Curves: smoothing

Nolio offers a smoothing setting that softens the curves, useful when the raw data is too jagged. It's also what can create a difference with what your app displays.

Drag the slider to get comparable curves:

  • all the way to the left, the data is raw, close to other apps;

  • all the way to the right, it is smoothed.

Elevation gain and altitude

On watches without a barometer, Garmin, Suunto or Strava correct the elevation gain from the GPS track, using their own algorithms. Nolio, which starts from the raw data, may show a very different result.

You can run an altitude recalculation by clicking Elevation gain:

Heart rate on Suunto

Suunto only sends us raw heart rate values. In the Suunto App, processing is applied to them that we don't have access to.

Nolio applies its own processing to get close to it, but the curves and average HR often remain different. We hope Suunto will one day send us the already processed data.

Resting HR on Garmin

Garmin sends us resting HR values continuously throughout the night and day, but never the one it chooses to display in Garmin Connect.

Nolio keeps the lowest of the values received. That explains the difference with your app.

💡 Tip

If your values still don't match after adjusting the smoothing, open a ticket and attach the workout file: that's what lets us take a close look.
