Account settings: Training load tab

Written by Romain Malbreil

This tab lets you enable and configure the different load models available in Nolio: Foster, Coggan and TRIMP. Training load helps you track the progress, fatigue and recovery of your athletes or yourself.

1. Access the "Training load" tab

Step

Action

1

From Nolio, click your avatar, then Settings.

2

In the Nolio section of the side menu, select Training load.

2. Foster model

2.1. Enable / disable

  • Toggle to enable the Foster load.

  • Optional: Enable ACWR (Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio).

2.2. Settings

Field

Description

Session duration

Filled automatically via GPS import, or manually.

Rate of perceived exertion (RPE)

A 0–10 value entered for each workout.

ACWR window

Number of weeks N (e.g. 4) over which the acute/chronic load ratio is calculated.

Key information

The Foster method multiplies Duration (min) × RPE to obtain a subjective load (weighted TRIMP). The ACWR compares the current week's load with the average of the previous N weeks — useful to detect sudden load spikes.

3. Coggan model

3.1. Enable / disable

  • Toggle to enable the Coggan load.

3.2. Required data

Priority level

Conditions

1 — FTP + power / pace

At least one FTP value (cycling or running) and workouts with watts or pace.

2 — Heart-rate zones

If no FTP: configured HR zones.

3 — RPE + duration

If no zones: RPE + duration take over.

Short-term (ATL) and long-term (CTL) loads are calculated with default constants (6.5 and 41.5), adjustable in the athlete profile to tune the model's sensitivity.

Key information

The Coggan model is very common in cycling and triathlon. If you don't have a power meter, Nolio converts pace + RPE into a power equivalent using Joe Friel's equivalence.

4. TRIMP model

4.1. Enable / disable

  • Toggle to enable TRIMP.

  • Choose between:

  • Banister & Morton (classic TRIMP)

  • Edwards & Stagno (HR zones)

4.2. Required data

Formula

Required variables

Banister & Morton

Resting HR / Max HR / average workout HR

Edwards & Stagno

Load coefficient for each HR zone · time spent in each zone

Each athlete has 4 adjustable constants that modulate short-term, long-term load, etc. Change them from the athlete profile if you want a more or less sensitive profile.

TRIMP measures the physiological load based on heart rate. Choose Banister for a continuous approach, or Edwards if your athletes train a lot by intervals and their HR zones are well calibrated.

5. Tips & best practices

  1. Always record the RPE so that Foster & Coggan work correctly.

  2. Watch the ACWR: a value > 1.5 may indicate an increased injury risk.

  3. Re-test your FTP several times per season to keep the Coggan load reliable.
